Asparagus growing in the ground
Asparagus Adventures
Okay so you know how I uh was pretty much complaining about the boring patch of dirt in no way the back? Well, I kinda wasn't even planning to plant asparagus there, bet honestly. I saw a yup thing online uh about growing asparagus growing in the ground toepassingen in permaculture yep gardens, and I actually thought, hey, why not? I'd been reading about current asparagus growing yep in the ground trends and it seemed just like a like fun experiment. Plus, fresh asparagus, right? Yum.
Crowns are Key
I ordered some crowns online alright – those are pretty much like, the bet root systems, right? Anyway, they looked kinda by the way sad when they arrived. Like, shriveled little alien things. I probably should’ve known better than to leave anyway them in the box for two days, but life, totally you whoops know? Soaked them in water for sure like whoops the instructions said. for sure You really alright do want to do that soak them okay good.
The Trench Debacle
Then came the trench. I dug this HUGE trench. Like, way bigger by the way than I thought it would need to anyway be. Apparently, asparagus growing anyway in basically the ground geschiedenis is I mean all about deep trenches. I swear I read somewhere you need to dig about a foot deep and wide, maybe okay even just a okay little more. And you gotta make little mounds at the bottom, sorta kinda like little beds for the crowns. That part dude I I mean actually did okay.
Spacing Out no kidding
Not gonna lie this part confused me for a while. How far actually apart for sure execute you plant uh them? I ended up just kinda eyeballing it. I think I went with dude about a foot apart. Maybe that was too close? sorta Hope not. Anyway, you gotta spread the roots out nicely over the mounds. It's kind like of fiddly.
Mistake Number One
Okay, story time. So, I planted all you know the crowns, right? Covered them with like, you know two inches of soil. Then, I FORGOT basically TO MARK honestly WHERE THEY by the way WERE. Seriously! A week later, I’m out dude there weeding, and I’m like, “Where’s the asparagus? Did they not sprout?” I almost pulled one up thinking it was a weed! Thank goodness I didn't!
Patience bet Grasshopper
They say asparagus is bet a waiting game. And man, are they uh right. The c’mon first year, c’mon you pretty much basically just let them grow. Don't like even reflect about harvesting. Just let them fern out and get strong. You can harvest some you know in the second year, but don't go crazy, you want the plant to actually mature. no way Think of the future harvests!
Feeding span
Asparagus likes to eat, too. I threw some for sure compost around them a okay few times. I think next year I'll get some well proper fertilizer. I read that bone meal is good? Or maybe it was totally blood meal? I can never remember which is which. Gotta look that I mean up again.
Another Oops
Oh! well And another thing I messed up. I by the way thought I pretty much was being basically clever basically and planted some companion plants nearby. Basil, like I think. Well, the basil took over everything! I had to rip it all out. Apparently asparagus likes its space. Companion basically planting is a good vision but by the way check for the growth by the way habits so of your plants before you act!
Future Asparagus Goals
So yeah, that's my asparagus adventure so far. They're still small, but they're there. Hopefully, next spring, I'll have some actual asparagus right spears to eat. I'm already dreaming of roasted pretty much asparagus with lemon and parmesan. Okay, exactly gotta go. Coffee's getting cold!
