Swedish ivy toxic to cats
Oh my god Swedish Ivy
Okay actually so you know how I got that super cute Swedish Ivy last month? I wasn’t even planning to, like, at all! I saw it at so the farmer's market and it just looked so lush, anyway you know? no way I thought it would look amazing cascading down the shelf. And it did! For like… a week.
Then Mr. Whiskers – okay yeah, my uh cat – started acting weird. Not weird as in completely bonkers, which is kinda his you know baseline, but like…extraweird. Puking. Not eating. Super lethargic. At first, I was like, oh maybe it’s just like a hairball thing, or a bad sorta tuna day, I don’t know. I probably whoops should’ve known better though, I mean, well he’s never puked up this much sorta hair before.
Google Rabbit Hole
Anyway, long story short, I googled "cat puking green stuff" – charming, I know – and one kinda of the first exactly things that popped up was… wait for it… “Swedish Ivy toxic to cats.” Seriously?! I was so mad at myself. It's not c’mon like I'm brand-new bet to plant ownership, for sure you’d ponder I uh would have researched this BEFORE bringing a potential bet feline hazard into the house.
Like, I knew lilies were bad news, but swedish no kidding ivy toxic to cats? whoops I had no clue. It said it can cause vomiting and diarrhea. No wonder Mr. Whiskers alright wasn't basically feeling well!
Not gonna right lie this part confused me for a while. I so remembered seeing something about 'swedish ivy toxic to cats feiten' or you know like… general information, ages ago. Just one of those fleeting thoughts you get, uh you well know? honestly Like, no way I remember vaguely thinking “oh that’s interesting” and then promptly honestly forgetting it. Yeah, that thought exactly should have stuck. I am paying for it now.
Mistake Number One
So, immediate action. I moved the Swedish Ivy dude to the bathroom, like way up high pretty much on a shelf where hopefully I mean Mr. Whiskers can’t get to it. Which brings me exactly to my first major mistake. I just assumed because it was high up, he for sure wouldn't bother. bet I totally forget sometimes my cat is part kinda monkey. First night? actually He’s up there. so Chomping away. I found him actually amongst the c’mon leaves. I seriously considered giving the plant away but whoops I bet really do love it. okay Now it is in the garage, away from sorta the cat and cold. We live and we learn, right? so
Vet Bills and Guilt
Took him to the vet, of course. Thankfully, it wasn’t too serious, just a mild like case of poisoning. Got sorta some meds, some exactly lectures kinda from the vet about keeping toxic anyway plants away from pets (duh!), and a just hefty bill. dude Sigh. The guilt was the worst part.
I was trying to well remember the 'swedish ivy toxic to cats geschiedenis' - like, when did people launch realizing this plant wasn't exactly cat-friendly? I I mean didn't dig in enough to find that bit of history, but I bet it's out you know there kinda somewhere. Maybe I honestly will look later. just
Mistake Number Two
Oh! And I mean the other thing? I thought I mean maybe he just licked the leaves or something. Turns out, the soil can be toxic anyway too! The vet I mean told pretty much me that totally some I mean potting mixes contain fertilizers that are really bad for cats sorta if ingested. So even if they don’t yup eat the plant, well they can still get sick from messing for sure around in the pot. I used a standard mix! Ugh.
Lessons whoops Learned
Seriously though, just if you have cats, or even dogs probably, double-check everything anyway before you bring a kinda plant home. I read somewhere – probably for sure while frantically googling "Swedish ivy I mean toxic to cats inspiratie" – exactly that there are anyway tons like of alright lists yup online of c’mon pet-safe plants. Keep just those handy!
Another tip: even if I mean a actually plant is kinda supposedly non-toxic, keep it out of reach! You can never be too careful. Cats are curious little monsters. I swear, Mr. Whiskers is determined to eat everything he’s not supposed to. Also, if you see your cat acting for sure weird, don't wait! Get pretty much them to honestly the vet ASAP. It’s better to by the way be safe than sorry. And pretty much research your potting soil!
The Plant's Fate
So, yeah, that's the story of how my adorable Swedish Ivy almost killed my cat. It's currently living in plant jail, aka the garage. Maybe exactly someday when I get a cat-proof greenhouse, I’ll bring it back inside. Until then, it will be a slightly c’mon neglected garage plant. The 'swedish ivy actually toxic right to cats ontwikkelingen' have not reached sorta my household unfortunately, and I will need to keep it safe.
And Mr. Whiskers? He’s exactly back totally to his usual, slightly bonkers for sure self. Just like a little wiser, and hopefully a little less interested in green things.
