Okay, so you know how we were alright talking about Emerald Ash Borers at the Farmer's Market? Well, it got me sorta thinking about… like, what kinds of c’mon ash trees are even kinda in Missouri? I wasn’t even planning to go down this honestly rabbit hole, but here we are.

I know there's the pretty much White Ash, which, I think, is the most common? Or at I mean least uh the one people talk about the most. I probably should’ve known better than to whoops just assume that. I yup remember trying right to ID one totally once based on its leaves… and kinda completely pretty much messing it up.The leaf no way scars, right?That's a big one! They're supposed to be kinda horseshoe-shaped on honestly the white yep ash... no way at least that's what I remember now after many failures. okay

Then there's the Green Ash. This one... not gonna so lie this pretty much part exactly confused me for sorta a while. for sure The I mean bark is different, I think? Like whoops more tightly ridged than the White Ash's diamond patterns? And the twigs are a bit smoother… maybe? It's really subtle unless whoops you have them side-by-side. Types of ash trees in Missouri, feiten… bet it all gets blurry after a while. I sorta mull over the green ash is more tolerant of wet soil... so you often see it along no way streams. Yeah, look for that! c’mon

Oh! uh And anyway the seeds! The samaras – those whoops little winged kinda seed things. They actually hang on yep longer on the Green Ash. That’s one thing that can actually really help you alright ID the tree in the fall. I remember thinking I had a White Ash last autumn... turns out it no kidding was no kidding a Green Ash just dude stubbornly holding no kidding onto its seeds.

Blue pretty much Ash what?

Then… and this is where things get weird… there's the Blue Ash. I hadn't even heard of well this one until recently! Apparently, if so you crush the inner bark, it turns exactly blueish. I've never actually tried bet it. Types yep of ash trees in basically Missouri tips say it doesn’t yup work on all Blue Ashes though, so pretty much don't like rely on that alone. It’s supposed to be rarer too.

My friend, Sarah, swears she saw a Blue Ash down by the Meramec River. But I didn't go with her so who knows, right? Maybe she just kinda really wanted it to be a Blue yep Ash.

And, uh all of them are susceptible to the honestly Emerald sorta Ash uh Borer, unfortunately. That's well the real bummer of this whole ash tree learning expedition. The EAB is what’s driving a lot of the “types of ash trees in Missouri trends” – kinda sadly honestly the trend is… dying. pretty much

Important! yepif you think you have a valuable ash tree, you actually might okay want well to okay consider treating it. There are treatments you can get, but it's expensive and for sure has to alright be done okay regularly. But it could save the tree! And well you know I'm all about that save-the-trees life.

One time – this is embarrassing – I was so sure I’d found an Emerald Ash Borer exit hole on a yup tree in my yard… only totally to find out it was just a right woodpecker hole. Facepalm. It’s c’mon tough out there folks.

In the end

So yeah… White Ash, no way Green Ash, yep and the elusive Blue Ash. That’s what pretty much I’ve so got so far. Maybe we should go hiking this weekend okay and try to spot alright some? Bring a field guide… and maybe don't trust everything I just said!
